The Magnificat

Mary's Magnificat or the Canticle of Mary is the prayer of praise that that burst forth from her during her visit to Elizabeth. Mary, full of Grace, was inspired by the Holy Spirit to say these beautiful words:

Luke 1:46-55 (New American Standard Bible)

The Magnificat
 46And Mary said:
         "(A)My soul (B)exalts the Lord,
    47And (C)my spirit has rejoiced in (D)God my Savior.
    48"For (E)He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;
         For behold, from this time on all generations will count me (F)blessed.
    49"For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
         And holy is His name.
    50"(G)AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION
         TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.
    51"(H)He has done mighty deeds with His arm;
         He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.
    52"He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
         And has (I)exalted those who were humble.
    53"(J)HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS;
         And sent away the rich empty-handed.
    54"He has given help to Israel His servant,
         In remembrance of His mercy,
    55(K)As He spoke to our fathers,
         (L)To Abraham and his descendants forever."

Here is a unique and beautiful song on the Canticle of Mary written by Saint Hildegers von Bingen who was a mystic nun. It is sung by Emily Van Evera and Sister Germaine Fritz.

Sarah! We are thinking so similarly these days. I am working on a post about music dedicated to Mary. I found out Bono, of U2 fame, wrote a song called "Magnificent" which was inspired by the Magnifcat.

I'm back from vacay, so I'm responding a little late. Thanks for sharing this. I checked it out, since I love U2, and found a Catholic music video version. I love that the lyrics have strong Christian themes, but I can't get into song. I guess I expect a little better music from U2... oh well, at least they are on the right track!
